A Stop Along the Way: Fallen Sun Shield

Hello everyone. I had an idea for a new series of articles to write while I work on the mechanics of my magic system. For any campaign that involves a long journey or quest there needs to be a lot of spaces to stop along the way, whether they be places of conflict, of discovery, or just a spot to rest for the night. These will sometimes be a location in my setting and other times just a generic fantasy or science fiction location. I hope to write one of these articles about once a week, so hopefully this will be the first of many.

Strewn along the road are several roughly rectangular grates of stone and metal. These immense blocks stretch some hundred feet from one end to the other and cover the roadway in many places, forcing the path to wind around them. At the end of this field of ruin lies a single block which has landed on a small ruined building. Beneath the shade of this propped up device sit the remains of previous visitors who have sheltered from the sun beneath the derelict, but a slight creaking of the building’s walls makes you dubious as to if it will remain this way for very long.

These shields are made of a metal mesh which reflects the harmful rays of the suns and a stone material that resembles an advanced form of float stone. In the years before the fall devices like these were used to create farmland which could support crops from every edge of the empire. Over time the magical charge of the float stone was depleted causing them to slowly fall to the earth.

The structure beneath the propped up shield appears to have been some sort of storage shed for the farm that has long since been looted of nearly all useful salvage. The rusted remains of some ancient farming machine rests in the center of the main chamber, while two smaller side chambers contain mostly empty shelves and cabinets.

This location can make a good location for a campsite or local base for exploring. You can use the following table as inspiration for what a party might find in the structure.

D6Description
1A cooling cook fire with a discarded pot full of stew.
2One of the side rooms contains the den of a large, clawed, animal, it is empty for now.
3A mangled body lies in a pile of dried blood in front of the farming machine with an outstretched arm pointed towards one of the side rooms.
4You hear a quiet cry from inside the structure and find an injured (child/adult/pet) who has been abandoned by a previous group.
5You find a patch of off world crops growing wild under the protection of the shield. 50% chance that they are mutated and poisonous.
6You hear shouting from the structure and find two groups of travels who are fighting over the camp site.

That is all for now. I’m hoping to update this post with some sketch’s and a map at some point in the future, but this will do for now. Have a good weekend everyone.
