EoG: FFSW – Campaign Introduction

I recently finished a long running Pathfinder campaign where I ran the Legacy of Fire Adventure Path. The campaign started in first edition Pathfinder before switching to Second edition Pathfinder. The completion of this campaign means it is time for me to start a new campaign and instead of picking up another adventure path or creating my own long term adventure I have chosen to experiment with running shorter terms games. These mini-campaigns will run for about 4-6 sessions depending on the game system used and give me and my friends the opportunity to try out a bunch of the different systems I have collected over the years, but have yet to get a chance to run. With that introduction out of the way allow me to introduce the first mini-campaign in this new project I’m titling, An Exploration of Games.

For our first campaign I’m easing the group into the idea of short term campaigns with a system I have run before, Edge of the Empire by Fantasy Flight. For this I’m using a system neutral (but heavily Star Wars influenced) location module I started writing some years ago called Margrez Station. The basic idea is that the party has ended up in an out of the way star system with relatively little Imperial Presence and runs afoul of the pirates and gangsters that plague the settlers in the system. The primary locations in the system are a Bespin like Gas giant named Margrez and a space station created by scavengers and settlers out of the remains of a pair of warships which collided during some great battle during the war and which now sits in a field of derelict ships.

Last week we did a session zero and created characters and my players decided they would like to play as a group of space truckers. The initial set-up situation is that they come out of hyperspace to make their way around some form of navigational obstacle when they are attacked by pirates. They manage to escape the pirates, but not before sustaining critical damage to the cargo container they are hauling, forcing them to make a detour to the nearest station for repairs.

The players work for Nova Traders Limited a small freight company specializing in moving cargo with unusual storage requirements in the mid and outer rim. The owner, Malk Nova, and his employees utilize a fleet of custom cargo containers with various modules to handle cargoes that require extreme heat, cold, or unusual atmospheric conditions, and ferry them around with their small fleet of specialized freighters, like the one flown by the party: the Nova Comet.

The party is relatively new to the company and the ship they’ve been assigned has seen better days. The furniture in the guest quarters is full of mold, the left engine array controller has a tendency to overheat and shutdown at top speed, and the integrated med-bed was removed ages ago for replacement parts for other ships in the company’s fleet. Despite all this the ship serves as a home to the characters and a welcome relief for a group of typical down on their luck spacers on the Edge of the Empire.

That is all for today. In the coming weeks I hope to share more of my module with you as my players discover it.
