Campaign Log: Relic Squadron – Episodes 1 & 2

This is the first session log article for my Relic Squadron Star Wars campaign run in the Edge of the Empire / Genesys RPG System from Fantasy Flight Games / Edge Studio. While I am running this campaign as a full Star Wars campaign, at the moment the direct setting is completely home brewed and would be appropriate for any science-fiction or space opera setting in which a civil war has recently ended. With that in mind I am planning, at least for the time being, to write these articles in a setting neutral manner, in-case I decide to publish this location in the future. Just know that the events of the campaign take place a few months after the events of Episode III – Revenge of the Sith in a remote star system far from the bustle and politics of the core worlds. That said allow me to briefly introduce the setting and describe the events of the first two sessions as best I can remember them.

The Olafran System

The Olafran system is a medium sized system of small rocky planetoids on the edge of the northern Mid Rim, just off of a secondary hyperspace lane. The system is home to the remains of several ancient mega-structures of unknown origin made from unique alloys that are not fully understood by modern scientists. The system consists of many irregular rocky planetoids, one gas giant with several small, inhabited moons, and one old red star. Many of the smaller ruined mega structures in the system host their own space stations, primarily populated by starship engineers, prospectors, and stellar researchers from a wide variety of species. The most important such station in the system is Byorme Station orbiting the gas giant Konna; which serves as a center of commerce and communication for the system, as well as host of the Olafran defense force. Throughout the War the system functioned as a resource depot, repair yard, and mining colony. The system started the war in Enemy controlled space but was claimed by the Republic in the second year of the war. The local defense force was absorbed into the Republic Military upon the system’s liberation; however, it was largely left to its own devices during the war due to the remoteness of the system and the movement of the front. The defense force was generally equipped with pre-War and damaged or surplus equipment left over from Republic Military starship refits. After the system’s liberation it saw little direct conflict and the defense force was largely involved in repelling pirates from the local stations and planets.

Relic Squadron

The party is made up of members of the local system defense force, specifically one of the defense force’s fighter squadrons: Relic Squadron. Relic squadron’s primary duties are running patrols of the system for any enemy incursions and/or pirate raids, running scientific and historical surveys for the department of antiquities, and disabling and capturing any war robots that may remain from the Enemy’s previous presence in the system. Because of the remote nature of the Olafran system, many of the squadron members perform secondary roles for the defense force when not on missions. The squadron consists of:

  • Moyra Reess (PC) a near human with geometric tattoos across Her body. The squadron’s chief mechanic, who fly’s a fighter modified with a second seat for a tow cable gunner.
  • Bennete “Ben” Dustsprinter (PC) a near human with retractable antennae on their forehead. Pilots the squadron’s boarding craft, a modified light freight.
  • Trella Bare’ah (PC) a blue skinned humanoid alien with head tentacles. The squadron’s computers expert and scout and serves as the base’s computer system administrator when not on missions.
  • SHADE (PC) a small spider like robot. Acting head of the department of antiquities after their maker died. Acts as the squadron’s scientific and historical advisor and leads any historical survey missions the squadron is sent on.
  • Twee ‘Bright-Wing’ Eal and Oola “Black-Wing’ Eal (NPC) a pair of twin tall bird like aliens. They each fly one of the squadron’s primary fighters.
  • Min Vera (NPC) a small humanoid, bat-like, alien. An engineer and the squadron’s explosives expert, She generally flies with Ben.
  • Buzz (NPC) a small robot with multiple appendages capped in various cutting tools. Assistant of Moyra.

Session One

The party is awaiting the return of the defense force commander, Colonel Fralik Holp, who was recalled to the capital to be briefed on the current state of the galaxy now that the War is over. They are going about their daily tasks on the base when they are scrambled to intercept a large vessel that has just entered the system from beyond the ancient shield wall that surrounds much of the system. It turns out that this vessel is called the INV Temperament and is part of the new Imperial Fleet and has arrived with Colonel Holp (now given the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the new regime). It also carries Captain Kealev Stifin, who will function as the new commanding officer for all local military personnel. Relic squadron escorts the frigate back to Byorme Station, where they gather for an initial briefing with Captain Stifin. It becomes quickly apparent through the new commander’s speech that this new Empire is very humanocentric and their place in the defense force may be in jeopardy. That evening Lt Cdr Holp secretly invites many of the non-human members of the defense force to dinner at his quarters where he expresses that he believes that the new Empire is a good thing for the Olafran system and that the non-human members of the defense force have nothing to fear from the current changes, but the party is skeptical.

Over the next couple of days various new policies as well as the attitudes of, predominately human, reinforcements brought by the Temperament make the party uneasy. Finally when it is revealed that SHADE is to be memory wiped and their position as the local director of antiquities given over to an Imperial Security Agent the party decides that they must flee the base. The party carefully gathers what supplies they can in Ben’s ship then leave the base for an assigned flight exercise. Moyra arranged to pick up an old smuggler friend, Jane Riffin, from one of the bases airlocks during the “exercise”. This accomplished the majority of Relic squadron makes their way towards a research outpost on the far side of the system where they can hopefully lay low for a little while, while Twee and Oola head towards Konna’s moon Kora to explain to their family what has happened.

Session Two

Relic Squadron arrives at the Far Eye Research Outpost only to find that its propulsion system is damaged and it is in danger of crashing into some asteroids. The squadron quickly docks their ships at the outpost’s various docking ports and introduces themselves to the scientists aboard. The head researcher, walrus alien Prof. Artum Blunderus, and his staff are delighted to see the party, thinking that they have been sent to assist them with the damage to the station. Through the ensuing discussion the party learns that the outposts communications satellite, which is necessary to send signals around the ancient mega-structures throughout the system, has been sabotaged and the only ones aware of the station’s plight are the scientists, Relic squadron, and the outpost’s maintenance tech, Doog’no Rotart, who took the outpost’s shuttle to get parts several days ago and has not returned. They also learn that a pirate captain by the name of Freanacky Spi’dher has had his eyes on the station for some time, but that the station’s automated defense systems have been enough to dissuade him until now.

Moyra determines that she can make some make shift repairs to the station, but that it will take time and more spare parts will be needed for a permanent fix. At that moment three modified light freighters come into view of the station and Captain Spi’dher demands that the scientists power down the defense system and surrender, promising that they will not be harmed if they do so. The party scrambles to repel the pirates before the outpost crashes into the steroids, as the pirate ships disgorge old drone star-fighters to attack the station from a distance. Shade and Trella operate the station’s defense turrets while Ben and Moyra attack the enemy ships with their own. Working together the party is able to disable the pirate vessels, but not before Captain Spi’dher escapes in a fighter.

After the battle the party is able to secure the captured pirates, as well as the traitorous Rotart who had joined the pirates, in one of the damaged ships while they use parts from the other ships to repair the outpost. During this time Twee and Oola rejoin their comrades and assist as they can. Once the repairs were complete the outpost was able to maneuver itself to a position where it could scan a large segment of the system for a more permanent hideout for Relic Squadron. After some discussion of the various locations discovered the party decides to investigate a large, abandoned, mining facility locating on the remnants of one of the destroyed shield wall segments. The Party instructs the scientists to wait for them to get away before contacting the authorities to pick up the captive pirates, then departs for the Lowland Slice Mine.

Well that was a lot. I’ll be busy preparing this week preparing for various games, so expect my next article to be the campaign log of episode 3 sometime early next week.
